What can a psychic really tell you?

A real psychic can give you guidance and probable outcomes based on the energy around you at the time of your reading, and insight into parts of your life you can't see on your own. What a psychic can tell you depends on what you need to know and on that psychic's particular gifts, training and experience. A prediction can change, because you have the power to change it.

If you are familiar with me and my work, you may know I have been trying to help change some of the negative views many people have about psychics and what they do. I have covered some of that in other posts, so here I want to focus on what a psychic should be, and what you can reasonably expect to learn from a reading.

What is a psychic reading really for?

The most profound idea that came to me at the beginning of my journey as a psychic advisor was that we are all here to learn something: to grow and evolve toward perfection of the soul. When a real psychic is doing their job, they help you become aware of certain parts of your life.

Psychic advice can be powerful because it gives you insight you might not otherwise have. You may be so caught up in day-to-day events that you shut out your own intuition and your own access to your Higher Self. Psychics access unseen elements in nature, but within all of us is a hidden code that people with highly developed intuition, or with certain divination tools, can more readily read. These people were either born with a natural gift or have developed it.

Once I found my true path, I made it my mission to help those who seek it find the power of their inner world and reach Higher Consciousness through spiritual practice. A psychic (a word that, to me, doesn't really describe what we do) is supposed to help you help yourself. Not to take the place of your own inner powers, insights or judgment, but to show you that you can do this for yourself.

Can a psychic's prediction change?

Yes. A true intuitive should be used for guidance, and to give you probable outcomes based on the energy you are carrying at the time of your reading. A prediction can change because you have the power to change it, especially once someone tells you what they see coming.

This is particularly useful when your advisor sees a possible negative outcome. It is really an opportunity to change that possibility by changing your thinking, actions, reactions or beliefs about the situation. Every conflict is a chance to bring energy into harmony through your thoughts and actions. Not every outcome is pre-ordained and fixed.

Many people need help finding their way. When you speak with a talented, authentic psychic, you open up more possibilities for using your free will to be at cause in your life, instead of at the mercy of circumstances. Deep insight into your life can have a powerful effect on your consciousness and bring about the very thing you want: empowerment. It's a much-used word these days, but it is real. It is what all souls are moving toward, whether they know it or not.

What a psychic can tell you varies. First, decide what kind of information you are looking for. Second, find the right psychic to give you that information. Not all psychics are created equal, and this post assumes you have done your homework and are working with a professional, ethical practitioner.

Do different psychics have different areas of expertise?

Yes. Some psychics claim to be 100% accurate, to know all and tell all, to be a psychic, a medium, an astrologer, a crystal reader and a reiki master all at once. I find that psychics who claim to be everything to everyone are probably neither professional nor ethical.

Find out what your psychic does best! Many professional psychics will tell you what they can and cannot do. For instance, a medium can be a psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. So if you want to contact a loved one who has crossed over, look for an authentic psychic medium.

Some psychics are clairvoyant (which means "clear seeing") and have visions. I have talked with many clairvoyants who can indeed "see" the past, present or future. Someone who is empathic can "feel" another person's emotions. Some psychics can do both, but some do only one or two things very well.

Do different psychics work in different ways?

Yes. Whether your psychic is clairvoyant, clairaudient, empathic, telepathic or a medium, or uses tools such as Tarot, Runes, the I Ching, numerology or astrology, how much they can tell you depends on their experience, skill, knowledge and natural gifts. All of these play a part in getting you accurate information, and you especially want someone knowledgeable if they are going to help you through guidance from a higher realm.

Some psychics use tools; some do not. How a psychic discovered their gift and how they have practiced it will determine their skill. No one should judge what connects a person with higher consciousness; spiritual gifts come in all shapes and sizes. It is mastery that should concern us. Psychic mastery is a discipline like anything else, and anyone seeking psychic advice should want someone who has mastered their gift.

What pitfalls should you watch out for?

Through many years of consulting psychics and clairvoyants myself, I have found that some can see certain kinds of things but can't help you at all with what concerns you.

For instance, you call someone who says they are clairvoyant. You want to know whether you will reconcile with your lover, and she sees that you have a new puppy and are wearing a yellow scarf. You are blown away. Wow, incredible! It is a gift for sure, to see that without seeing or knowing the person. But many everyday people have psychic gifts, and that doesn't make them able to help with a serious situation in your life, one that calls for someone experienced, knowledgeable and skilled at getting you real answers from Higher Consciousness.

Seeing what you are wearing and that you have a new puppy doesn't mean that clairvoyant can see the answers you seek clearly and deeply. Their ability may not match your concerns. People amazed by small things like that tend to believe everything the clairvoyant says afterward. In reality, that gift is for seeing "you" physically and your physical surroundings, an excellent talent called remote viewing, but not a match for your reconciliation question or your career question. To an inexperienced seeker it is amazing enough to make you decide this person can see "everything," and many times that is not the case. So ask the psychic you are calling to spell out exactly what their expertise is, and then decide whether this psychic is the one for you.

What do the different psychic gifts mean?

  • Empathic: they can "feel" another person's feelings and emotions.
  • Telepathic: they can know another person's thoughts.
  • Clairvoyant: they can see the past, the present and the future through visions.
  • Clairaudient: they receive or "hear" information, even sounds, in their mind.
  • Clairsentient: they pick up information through physical sensations connected to you, or to a person you are asking about.

The skill of each practitioner will vary, so ask about that too. How much experience do they have?

How can a skilled psychic help you?

Each of these abilities, if untrained or at the beginning stages, may not be able to help you. But combined with training, experience and knowledge, they can give you a truly unique experience with an authentic intuitive advisor: one that helps you in powerful ways, supports your personal empowerment, and gives you insightful answers and probable outcomes. Remember, outcomes are based on the energy around you at the time of your reading, and they can change.

Many people believe that if something is meant to be, there is nothing you can do to change it. Some things in every life are destined, because certain events must take place for your soul's growth, or in many cases because of karmic debts, the correction of imbalances created by misusing certain energies in previous lifetimes. Other experiences are matters of free will, where your own decision or action is what is being tested.

So a reading is not meant to let you bypass experience, because your soul will go through what it must on this "stopover" on this plane of existence. But an expert reading can help you see what is eluding you, or a point you seem to be missing, and point you in the right direction. Your psychic can also identify a block or a karmic pattern you are having trouble with. Sometimes it's not just what Mom and Dad did to us as children.

Sometimes simply becoming self-aware is empowering in itself. Becoming aware of something significant through spiritual guidance can have an overwhelming effect, and that moment can become a turning point in your life. A true psychic advisor has done their job well if they can help you this way. But they are not a substitute for experience, and a professional, ethical psychic would never try to make you dependent on them.

What should a psychic not be telling you?

  • What decisions to make. Always take away from your reading what helps you make your own decisions about your life.
  • When someone will die. An ethical, responsible psychic should never predict death.
  • That they will do spells for you. Spells to change the course of events, or to change or harm another person supposedly for your benefit, will only bring negative karma on you and that psychic, and the karmic consequences could be devastating. This is totally unethical.
  • That they can make something happen for you. That is simply false. A psychic advisor has no special powers to control your fate or anyone else's behavior.

Psychic advisors are supposed to be spiritual people who have chosen to help others with their developed gifts, never using those gifts to boost their own ego, control another's will, or make you psychologically dependent. Those types are out there. Beware of psychics who say they need to do "energy work" on you through long meditations at a great cost. If they tell you that you have a negative block or a curse, that is a notorious psychic scam. If you meet a psychic like this, even one who does seem to have psychic ability, do yourself a favor and hang up or leave immediately. To learn more, read my post How to Spot a Fake Psychic.

How do you choose the right psychic?

Know your psychic, and have a clear idea of what you need to know so you can make the best choice. Ask your psychic what they specialize in, because no one specializes in everything. Let them stick to what they do best, and make sure they have training and experience. There is nothing worse than a reading from someone who doesn't know what they are doing, even if they have an undeveloped gift.

Do your homework, ask the right questions, and understand a psychic's limits. No one but God is all-knowing and 100% accurate. Ignore anyone who makes those claims.
